Completely agree with you, teachers read, attend congresses, talk, but when the time comes to apply everithing they've 'learnt' or talked about, it seems to have vanished in the air. It depends more on the way you are that on what you may read or learn, I mean, obviously everybody can learn, but you have to 'feel' it, if not, it won't succeed. Students are very sensitive and they know when a teacher is involved in what he/she is doing, when he/she is interested in student's interests, when he/she is someone who is there when they need not when the teacher thinks is needed, when he/she is there as a coach, not as a captain, when he/she suggests but not impose, when he/she is someone who wants them learn the subject but most who cares about them; this is the key to open their hearts and minds.
Come to Scotland, Aaron! We get 35 hours of paid Continuing Professional Development (CPD) time AND we get to choose what we do, whether on a list or not. And at least 10 hours of this HAS to be reading.
